This keynote panel will address and develop on the three fundamental entities driving the evolution of Advanced and Smart Manufacturing within the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In a first instance, “smart materials”, such as advanced polymers, metals and powders, being designed and engineered to have several functional properties that can improve and extent the life of components and structures, and that interact with their environment. In a second instance, “smart (manufacturing) processes” revolutionizing how we produce things, such as additive manufacturing and laser-based manufacturing, allowing industry to handle a wide range of (new) materials processing applications. Lastly, and in a third instance, “smart (production) systems” eliminating the remaining shop-floor inefficiencies towards near-zero-waste and creating new production paradigms thanks to the advances and convergence of information and operations technologies.
